Inspired by color

If we’ve met in real life, you know that I love color.  While there is inspiration for color everywhere, I have been spending a lot of my online time at a few spots in particular.  Pinterest. COLOURlovers. we ♥ it.  These three sites, will give you enough color inspiration to last for weeks.

I know there is a ton of talk about Pinterest right now.  It’s all true.  Pinterest is amazing. I could get lost for hours there. (ok so maybe I have…..shhhh…)  Although it all completely inspires me, I have an i heart color board where I pin anything that jumps out at me as inspiration for color.  Beth from Stories from A to Z has a great Pinterest tutorial for those of you wanting to join in on the fun.

I’m sure that a lot of graphic designers use COLOURlovers on a daily basis.  Another happy space to get totally lost in.  It can be pretty overwhelming at first with so many options.  You can browse palettes, patterns, trends and more.  But I’ve referred to COLOURlovers several times to find a particular color and what coordinates with it.  Today I had fun looking in the craft color trends. (image above found there)

At  we ♥ it you can create an album (a heart) with your favorite images and videos.  I have just been using it to find colorful pictures.  Using their search tool, you can find thousands of amazing images. And just a warning- there are some grown up images.

While some people prefer neutrals I gravitate to red, aqua, and these days kelly green.  Oh how I love kelly green.  Where do you go for color inspiration?  Do you shy away from color?

All I really need to know I learned from blog conferences….

Remember years ago when the lists came out for “All I really need to know I learned from…..__________(fill in the blank)?”  After returning from Bloggy Boot Camp in San Diego this weekend, I thought I’d share my take:

All I really need to know I learned
from blog conferences…..

  • Mind your p’s and q’s.
One of my mom’s favorite sayings growing up (Hi Mom! Yes, you were right).  Being polite and gracious goes a long way.  Introduce yourself, shake hands (hug if you are a hugger).  Simple and easy to do.
Someone also posted the other day (and I whole-heartedly agree with), to not pretend that you know who someone is if you have no clue who they are.  If you don’t know them, it is ok.  Just let them know that you look forward to getting to know them and their blog.
  • It’s ok to color outside of the lines (aka be different!).
As craft bloggers, I think this is in our blood.  We are constantly thinking of new ideas and looking for a way to “color outside the lines.”   This comes in really handy at a blog conference.  The one way that I try to stand out is with my business cards:

  • Strive to keep learning.
Blog conferences are based on this premise.  There is always something new to learn.  Those at the top of their game are constantly learning more and doing more.  The information given at conferences can be overwhelming.  There’s just so much!  Take in all the information that you can and apply it as you can.  If you did everything you learned all at once, you’d need to take a three day nap.  Do it at your own pace. But the important thing is that you keep learning and growing instead of staying stagnant.
  • You can accomplish anything you want if you set your mind to it.
Bloggers (and blog conferences) are the ultimate example of this.  Who would’ve thought five or ten years ago that there would be people with thousands of followers, getting unique opportunities and having a voice online?  Blogs provide a way to accomplish all kinds of crazy, exciting dreams.  Just go for it!
It doesn’t matter if you are just starting out as a blogger or if you are a blog veteran, set goals that you can work towards.  Then hit the ground running and make those goals and dreams happen.
  • Don’t compare yourself to others
To be honest, this is one that I’ve struggled with.  With so many blogs out there, it’s hard to not fall into the “She’s been blogging for ______ amount of time and has ______ x’s more readers than I do….” etc, etc.  It is great to set goals and look up to people, but when it turns into a competition and comparing yourself, negativity seeps in nothing good comes from that.  Try hard to focus on what you have to offer instead of being down on what you don’t have.
  • Life is so rich surrounded by people you love.
It’s amazing to me that some of my close friends are bloggers I’ve met online over the years.  Blogging conferences have launched some of the friendships I’ve made online to deeply rooted friends.  They are my people.  They get this side of my life.  They understand and have similar goals to mine.   So far, I have only had amazingly positive experiences meeting people in real life.

  • Hands down the biggest thing: Be yourself.
I know this is often easier said than done, especially in a new environment like a blog conference.  But ultimately people are attracted to realness.  Don’t try to be someone you are not.  People will love you for YOU.  I promise!! One of my favorite quotes is:
“Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else.” ~Judy Garland

    P.s. HAVE FUN!!!

Pure Bliss

Blissdom has come and gone…. I still can’t quite wrap my brain around it.
After months and months of talking, planning and preparing I hopped on a party plane to Nashville, Tennessee for Blissdom. I was lucky enough to room with four amazing ladies: Lindsey, Jeannett, April and Jess. I also had the chance to meet people that I consider my friends for the first time. (yes blogging can seem like a weird way to meet new friends, but I have made some friendships of the truest kind through this little blog o’ mine) I learned a lot. Laughed a lot. And shared a lot. As much as I loved learning about public relations and monetization (i did, surprisingly), the underlying take home was the friendships and relationships planted solidly from round table discussions and late night chats. Without further ado, Blissdom in pictures:

Night One: the California party plane girls joined up with our Utah counterparts for an evening out at the Cracker Barrel. Laughs and good times were had by all. Wish I could say the food was good, but at least the retro candy made up for it.

Day 2: Wisdom Workshops with some new insights and a (very loud) kickoff party:

I had fun getting to know the other DIY/Craft tribe members.
I love this picture that Kellie took of the treats passed out at our table:

My go to music friend (and all around sweet gal), Marilyn sent mixed cds over the last year or so that are now my all time faves and on one (or two?) she included Mat Kearney. Yep, before I knew who Mat Kearney was. When I found out Mat was going to be at Blissdom, I was sooo super excited. I had fun sending Marilyn some really bad video clips that night. ;)
Side note and embarrassing story: We got up to take pictures with Mat and Michelle. Mat said, “Someone needs to come stand by me.” Kelly and I both bolted for it and apparently I wanted it more because I stumbled into the photo background almost knocking it down and myself right with it. I immediately said, “Well that wasn’t embarrassing at all.” Mat, being the gentleman that he was, saved me and blamed it on himself. Are you kidding Mat? Love you all the more. Michelle was sweet and tried to play it off too. Those two, cute and humble. Oh and talented.

I’m so so so so so so sad that I didn’t get pictures with other people that I loooved being with. Like Ruthanne (best caramel maker evah, even if we did eat it with a spoon!) and Gussy.

The week since I’ve been home has been tough. I was thrilled to come home to three kids who threw themselves at me with big old bear hugs and a husband that was happy to see me as well. But getting back to “normal” (no such thing around here), has been rough. I’ve had a lot of time to reflect. And I still haven’t quite figured it out.
For now, I’m really happy that I had the chance to connect with people I adore and learn a thing or two (or twenty) along the way. Blissdom was just that- pure bliss.
